This wedding was just so... real. Overflowing with the kind of love that doesn't need a script. Jacob and Reychel Rivera's August wedding at Willowhaven Park & Nature Center in Kankakee, Illinois was so sweet. Surrounded by the people they love most, a wonderful mix of family and friends and just really cool people, with their daughter Leah stealing the show! And as their Kankakee documentary wedding photographer, I had the privilege of capturing every second of it.

What Does a Romantic Garden Wedding in Kankakee, Illinois Look Like?

It looks like blush pink, dusty blue, soft yellow, and sage green. It looks like a nature preserve bathed in late-summer light. Jacob and Reychel chose a garden-inspired aesthetic that felt less like a theme and more like an extension of who they are... so warm and rooted. That grounding energy carried through every detail of their day.

From Nerves to a Sun-Kissed Ceremony

If you've followed Lux Everlasting for any length of time, you know people book me not just for my creative eye and photography skills, but also for my calming nature. Reychel arrived with the typical nervousness you find sometimes... The first part of a wedding day can be overwhelming after all. But after a quick pep talk, Reychel settled into her relaxed, fun self. And the day began to take shape as all her family came together to put finishing touches on the venue and her makeup. These kind of documentary photography golden moments are what I love... when the people around you support you come together and make things happen so you can just enjoy yourself. There's no posed shot that could ever replicate this.

Shortly after, guests had began to gather. And what followed was a beautiful, intimate ceremony under the summer sun. Reychel's sister Samantha officiated with the kind of personal warmth only a sibling can bring. Leading the procession were flower girls Leah (the couple's own daughter, age two and a half) and Olivia, Reychel's youngest sister, alongside ring bearers Parker and Warren Gurnitz. The sight of Leah participating in the wedding that made her family official is the kind of moment that becomes a story told for the rest of their lives!

The Reception

The reception had the perfect tone of celebration without overwhelming the intimate, garden-party atmosphere the couple had built so carefully. Creme of the Crop delivered a catering spread that kept guests happily at their tables long past the last toast, and Carly Panfil's hair work held beautifully from ceremony through the final song. The soft pastel palette, the organic florals, the romantic quality of the Illinois summer light at golden hour, it all came together in a way that felt less like event design and more like a living painting. This is precisely the kind of day is why Lux Everlasting exists: Not to manufacture something that looks like a magazine spread, but to preserve something that looks like your real life at its most luminous!
